In order to attract more overseas outstanding persons, the governmental program: “Taiwan Tech Trek” came into being and has been receiving enthusiast responds from participants.

This year, the program admitted 303 young overseas Taiwanese around the globe. They will return to Taiwan during summer vacation and work as an intern in different institutions. One of the admitted participants, Nora Lin, from the USA, excitedly said that she especially wants to devote herself in assisting children with delayed language development, given the fact that she has an educational background in language therapy.

According to Executive Yuan, this year, the program had received 461 applications from 20 countries globally. Apart from the US and Canada, the two most popular countries to receive applications, the program also received 34 applications from Vietnam.

The institutions for program internships include places such as National Taiwan University Hospital, Institute of Information Science from Academia Sinica, and Eden Social Welfare Foundation (Eden). Nora Lin was admitted to an internship position in Eden. She majors in language therapy at University of the Pacific in the US.

“I learned that there are many children who received supports from Eden have delayed language development. I wish to gain some practical experiences and devote my knowledge there this time. My sister also had interned at Eden before, she had benefited a lot as well,” said Lin.

Taiwan Tech Trek not only brings practical working experience for participants, but also intends to strengthen their sense of belonging to Taiwan as they are living or studying overseas. One of the graduate, Yang Ya-Li, who joined the program before said, “One of the most interesting thing is to get lost in Taiwan. You can get lost but still enjoy its mouthwatering food on the side of the roads. I had gone through all Taipei’s night markets when I was doing my internship there. I also saw the very friendly sides of Taiwanese. It has helped me a lot and brings my heart closer to Taiwan.”

The internship this year starts from the beginning of June until mid September, lasting 4 to 7 weeks depending on the participants and institutions. The institutions will also grant participants fund equivalent to NT$10,000 for flight ticket and a daily wage of NT$600.
