A Great Leap in Industry and University Collaboration, Create an Accessible and Friendly City with Eden

Taiwan is about to become super aging society, and with the change of population, industry, community functions and social integration will be adjusted accordingly. Besides the impact of the epidemic, more complex environmental situation and social needs, it is much urgent and necessary to solve the problem on how to build an age-friendly city and implement it thoroughly in every corner of Taiwan.Eden Social Welfare Foundation is dedicated to serve people with disabilityand promote accessibility living. In addition to actively developing diversified services and programs, they also hope to combine the power of industry, government, and university to alleviate the crisis better through mutual collaboration.

In recent years, Eden held the “Taiwan residential accessibility repairing situation and development forum” in 2018 to promote the importance of accessibility design and put accessible environment improvement into practice. This year, Eden further collaborated with the China University of Technology (CUT) in acollaboration between industry and university, and held a signing ceremony. To cooperate with the government's epidemic prevention measures and avoid crowds, the two parties signed an industry-university collaboration contract online, and the ceremony was completed by Eden Foundation's CEO, Yen-Bing,Chung, and CUT President, Yan-Bo,Tang.

Yen-Bing,Chungsaid that the aging index and the proportion of old houses in Taipei City are the highest among the six cities. According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of the Interior, Taipei has exceeded 500,000, and more than 600,000 old houses built over 30 years. If the living environment of the elderly is full of barriers, it not only affects the quality of life, but also increases the risks of accidents. Therefore, if the government is to promote the policy of aging in the local community, the problem of aging people living in old houses is a necessary concern for Taiwan. In addition, due to the impact of epidemic in recent years, elderly people spend more time at home to cope with epidemic prevention measures, which requires our attention to reduce the risk of accidents and create a barrier-free living environment.

To achieve this, Eden has recruited volunteers to set up a home repairing group for the disadvantaged and remote areas to build a home with safety and security, plus launched the courses to promote the importance of accessibilityspace repair. We are pleased to collaborate withthe China University of Technology (CUT), looking forward to combine the professionals of the Department of Interior Design and Architecture, collaborate through students’ internships from Eden volunteers’ training.  With the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 11-Sustainable Cities and Communities as the vision, take “Local Connection” and “Talent Cultivation” as development goals, we hope to create an accessible and friendly city.
