Testimonies from interns with spring internship 2018
Joseph Winkler
While at Eden I had the honor of helping out with the planning of certain volunteer events as well as some publicity through proofreading and other facets. In addition, I occasionally had the opportunity to work directly with the careusers through volunteer work. When planning events I was able to use my experience as a resident assistant at my school dorms effectively plan events according to the careusers’ needs, as well as planning preparation for the volunteers. Additionally, I helped in the landmine workshop event preparation and execution which was a great experience and has really helped prepare me for the future since I was able to work directly with professionals in my desired field of work.
I am really quite glad that I was able to take part in this internship as it helped me get some experience in an international NGO, and in the international affairs department nonetheless. This was really important to me as I want to work in international affairs or international relations in the future. I really did not know what to expect when I first came here, except that this organization was dedicated to helping disabled and disadvantaged people. I did not know whether I would be working directly with careusers or in the office, but I am glad that I got the chance to work in both facets. However, I am especially glad that I got to work in the office as much as I did, to get some experience for possible future work, and to understand through first-hand experience how important the office work is to the successful running of the more public volunteer events.
This internship has helped me in more than just office work and preparing for events, but also in giving me experience which will be useful for the working world after graduation from university. I think that one of the most important skills I improved while here is the ability to speak Chinese. When I first came to Eden I had a tough time making even basic sentences and having a conversation seemed an arduous task. Now, I take most of my instruction in Chinese, and even received my directions for work today and supervision in Chinese. However beyond the ability to speak Chinese, the ability to plan events and work effectively and efficiently in an office are skills that will stay with me the rest of my life. I think it goes without saying that I have spent most of my life in school up to this point, and so have become used to the routine of school and being able to create my own work preferences. However, working here at Eden helped prepare me for some aspects of office work, especially working in NGOs. All in all though, this was a great experience that I would do again in a heartbeat.

As a French student, I needed to do an internship in order to graduate my master degree. Also, when I got to know about Eden, I thought that join this foundation was the perfect opportunity for me to be active in a humanitarian association. Also, the wide range of action of Eden was definitely an opportunity to get to know more and to see more about disabilities. I had the chance during this internship to go to several services of Eden. I join the daycare center, the early intervention center, Dalong and Yishou elderly center. So I could acknowledge different age, different caring methods, and different disabilities.
I was really impressed by everything I could observe during my stay in Eden. I think that these persons are amazing, and I want to thank them to share this time with me. They are more than their disabilities; they are persons with their personalities, but also with their capacities. All these people, can it be elder or toddler, they try to overcome their differences to get the best of themselves.
But more than just accomplish social work, I had the chance to participate in amazing events with Eden. We had small animation like one in Yishou center, which was a cultural introduction of volunteers country to the elder of Yishou. We’re also about to hold a summer camp for the visually impaired teenagers. But my favorite one was the Asia platform to ban landmines. This event was impressive, and everybody helps with the preparation. But more than that, it was awesome to be part of this international meeting. Organizations from all over the world fighting together for the same purpose. Victims sharing their hardships with all of us. More than touching, it was so powerful, it has given me the impulse to join the fight.
