The Slow-Flying Angels were born with developmental delays.  Their parents must race with time for the golden healing period of age 0 to 3 without missing any chance that helps those Angels to catch up the expected growth.  The progress of those Angels can always be the deciding factor of the family atmosphere.  Every little progress of those Angels is always a big encouragement for the parents.

Early Intervention: The Importance of Parents

“Slow-Flying Angels take more time to learn.  It can’t be rush at all.”  That is how the parents involving in the early intervention feel profoundly.  With cognitive impairment, speech delays, muscular endurance problems…  , the Slow-Flying Angels must make conscious efforts to practice consistently on things which children at their same age can do easily, so they can reach the growth milestones gradually.

According to the 2017 data of Ministry of Health and Welfare (MoHW), 41,755 children in Taiwan have been taking early intervention until now.  Behind those numbers, there are big supporting systems: families.  The parents of the Slow-Flying Angels must bear the inside panic of themselves and the outside judgments from others.

Early intervention: Lessons of Whole Family

Tong-Tong is taking an early intervention in Eden because of speech delay. She can only speak two words, “Mom” and “Dad”. Hsu, Wei-Chun, the Section Chief of educare givers, found that as long as Tong-Tong made her expression in her eyes without speaking, her mother and families would give what she asked for to her. Therefore, in the early intervention classes, they need not only to ask Tong-Tong to practice expressing her needs by speaking but also to request her mother not to satisfy what Tong-Tong asks for immediately. The families of Tong-Tong must work with teachers together to keep stimulating Tong-Tong to express her needs by speaking.

Home is the most familiar place for children. Therefore, Hsu Wei-Chun, the Section Chief of educare givers, gives the lessons of early intervention at Tong-Tong ‘s house. In the delighted circumstance, she tries to apply objects or things that are around Tong-Tong to stimulate her to speak. The most important thing is to show to the families what things may be applied to help Tong-Tong continue practicing together at home after class.

Early intervention: Parents, The Best Therapist for Children

The Section Chief of educare givers teach the specialized skills of the early intervention to parents.  After parents learned, they teach children.  In the period of the early intervention, parents are the bridges between children and the outside world.   Parents block the upsetting judgments from others for children, consist the 99 times practicing with children, and celebrate the success of the 100th practicing with children together.  In the early intervention, not only Slow-Flying Angels should be cared but also those hardy and soft hearts parents should be understood and supported.  During the period of early intervention, the parents have overcome huge pressures. They also need to be understood and encouraged by families and other people.
