Welcome President Tsai Ing-Wen Visits Xichih Xiufeng Community-based Inclusive Living Program

    On August 24th, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-Wen along with Minister of Interior Hsu Kuo-Yung, Legislator Lai Pin-Yu and Shen Fa-Hui, visit the Eden’s Xiufeng Community-based Inclusive Living Program in Xichih which is serve for persons with disabilities. The purpose of this visit was to gain the insight of the service at the Xiufeng Community-based Inclusive Living Program, to spend time with the service users, and to show appreciation to the front-line social workers for their dedication and hard-works.

    As President Tsai arrived at the Xiufeng Community-based Inclusive Living Program, most of the service users were very excited and shouted their greeting enthusiastically: “Hello President!”

By hearing the enthusiastic greeting, one of the service user suddenly looked up and asked: “Who are you?” President Tsai replied kindly: “I’m President Tsai Ing-Wen.”  Surprisingly, this service user introduce herself calmly “Hi President! My name is Yu!” The warm and calm introduction perfectly revealed Yu’s confidence in social interaction.

  Since 2013, Eden Social Welfare Foundation has been entrusted to manage Xichih Xiufeng Community-based Inclusive Living Programby the New Taipei City Government. Currently, there are 10 service users living here. With a community-like living environment, service users are facilitated to make their own decision on where and how they want to live. This empowerment of decision-making and the enhancement of their independence reflect the spirit of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

 

    Furthermore, the Xiufeng Community-based Inclusive Living Programarranges recreational and social activities for the service users to equip their living skills:such as integrated learning with mainstream children, cultural activities of rice dumplings making, and barbecue; chores load sharing with other people, etc. In addition, the Program also helps to link the service users with employment and vocational training centers so that ultimately they are prepared to return to the community and living independently.

 

  According to the Eden Social Welfare Foundation, persons with disabilities are just the same as you and me. As long as there is appropriate support, they are able to enjoy life with quality and dignity in communities. We appreciate President Tsai’s on-site visit and her care regarding the needs of persons with disabilities. We also hope that our society, together with Eden, provide better support to persons with disabilities so that their potential and capability could be well recognized, and their contribution would make society a
