The opportunity to work is not a privilege but is a fundamental right! The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) states that the right of persons with disabilities to work on an equal basis with others shall be protected, and the work environment shall be open, inclusive, and accessible to persons with disabilities. Based on the spirit of CRPD, Eden established various sheltered workplaces to equip and empower persons with disabilities. The Information Key-In Center is one of them, and Wei is our best witness.

Wei is an employee at the Information Key-In Center. Though she has achondroplasia, she stays positive and is always cheerful. “It doesn’t matter if I can’t grow taller, for I am already blessed to be able to run and jump,” Wei said.

Wei’s dad was a professional swimmer. Wei followed his passions and fell in love with swimming since she was young. With determination and hard-working, Wei won multiple competitions, including two gold medals and a silver medal at the women’s race of the 2018 National Disabled Games. Wei even broke the national record of 100-meter breaststroke.

After graduating from high school, Wei was referred to Eden’s Information Key-In Center by the Department of Labor in the Taipei City Government. To overcome her barriers from the disabilities, she brought her determination and hardworking spirit from the swimming pool to the office. She has improved her typing skills dramatically from only being able to type 30 to 40 characters per minute, to now 70 characters per minute.

Furthermore, to make the working environment more friendly, the Center provides her accommodated chair to tailor with her physical needs. The chair is equipped with a smaller seat cushion, a smaller backrest, and a footrest. These installations could help to alleviate the discomfort caused by a long period of sitting and could also decrease her health draining.

Looking back to all these years of care for Wei and knowing what she has achieved, Wei’s dad is so proud of her. Wei’s dad is also very grateful for the support from Eden, and the patient accompanies her job coaches. Because of Eden, Wei’s family won’t have to worry much in her future life as she has been trained with skills. Wei’s father encourages those whose family members have disabilities to go out and look for support. He said,” Be brave and seek support and help. By doing so, you will obtain more strength and warmth and will be able to continue on the journey of life”.
