Do you know? July is Disability Pride Month!

Dating back to 1990, the first Disability Pride “Day” was held in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. It soon became a global event to promote public awareness and increased the visibility of persons with disabilities. The goal of the Disability Pride Month is to proudly recognize and celebrate persons with disabilities who contribute to our diverse world!

“Disability pride has been defined as accepting and honoring each person's uniqueness and seeing it as a natural and beautiful part of human diversity.”-by AmeriDisability

At Eden, we dedicate ourselves to empowering persons with disabilities by helping and encouraging them to express themselves via artistic activities. Following this dedication as well as implementing Article 30* of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), we provide a platform for them to exchange their arts and showcase their identities. In 2016 when we hosted the Asia Accessible Art Festival in Taipei, we invited persons with disabilities from Chinese speaking countries to present their artwork/performance. In 2017 and 2018 this platform has been expanded to more countries and cultural backgrounds and became the Asia-Pacific Art Festival which provided a bigger platform for persons with disabilities.

The mission of the Asia-Pacific Art Festival is to provide an exchange platform for artists with different abilities from the Asia-Pacific region to showcase their talents and potentials and to promote social inclusion.

Today, persons with disabilities are emerging as writers, artists, and even performers! If you are interested in the Asia-Pacific Art Festival in 2021 and would like to participate, stay in tune and we will post it when it is opened for application!

July’s Disability Pride Month is a time to celebrate persons with disabilities and to advocate for a more inclusive world. We will keep encouraging more and more persons with disabilities to take pride in themselves. No matter what kind of disability we have, we will embrace it as part of our identities. Have faith and remember that God has a plan for every one of us.
