Intervention Brings Inspiration

In order to meet us for the interview, CHIEN-PIN came to Qishan Early Intervention Center in Kaohsiung County early in the morning. He is now a senior student major in Hospitality at the vocational high school. Even with the minor intellectual disability, he recently obtained two professional certificates – one in Baking, and the other in Chinese Cuisine (level 3).

CHIEN-PIN’s previous social worker, Ms. YEH, YU-JEN kept him company during the interview. YU-JEN remembered CHIEN-PIN’s mother said months ago when they bumped into each other, that “I am very grateful for all the help from teachers in the early intervention center. With their help, CHIEN-PIN could return to the mainstream class from the special class in elementary school, enter junior high school and then the vocational high school, not to mention these two certificates that he just gained recently. I’m absolutely delighted and thankful”.

Early Intervention Is The Turning Point

In preschool, CHIEN-PIN was recognized with potential developmental delay by a community health screening. After attending Eden’s Early Intervention program for a while, CHIEN-PIN later was advised to attend the mainstream kindergarten so that he could receive more stimulus. Meanwhile, CHIEN-PIN continued his early intervention service twice a week at Eden.

With all the love and support, CHIEN-PIN’s mother tried her best to cooperate with the medical and therapeutical teams, and makes sure CHIEN-PIN received sufficient early intervention service. They live in a remote area and it takes 40 minutes for them to driving from home to center. Since parents are requested to attend every therapy session with their children, CHIEN-PIN’s mother had spared no effort to juggle between housework, her job and the therapy sessions for three years.

Forgetful, Yet Optimistic

As we all agree, positive attitude helps people get through most of the ups and downs in the life journey. One of the most precious characteristics that CHIEN-PIN owns is optimistic. He had disclosed what he went through in junior high school. His classmates teased and bullied him. “My classmates bruised my back with punches.” His body was hurt. “Luckily I have very bad memory. So, what’ve happened today won’t be remembered in the next day.”

More than that, CHIEN-PIN is with perseverance and never give up. For instance CHIEN-PIN was particularly worried about the written test for his Baking-Certification Test due to his forgetfulness. He had actually tried 3 times to pass the test and that was even with the help from the intern teacher. Besides attending school, currently CHIEN-PIN is also taking his internship in an industrial bakery factory. He worked in the “Shaping” section over 2 months now and his arms got cramps from time to time because of soreness from his hard work. CHIEN-PIN said he won’t give up. He is aware that his weakness is his memory, along with slow verbal expression and response. But thanks to his optimism, all of these setbacks wouldn’t bother him at all and he would continue to strive for the best.

Compared with baking, CHIEN-PIN is better at Chinese Cuisines, such as Mapo Tofu or Ginger Duck Stew…etc. which are well-loved by his family members. His specialty is the red-bean bun, which is his grandmother’s favorite food. What’s more fun is that his mother and grandmother love imitating the dishes CHIEN-PIN has made for them.

Determined and Thankful

CHIEN-PIN hopes to obtain the driving license of motorcycle when he turns 18. Despite the discouragement from some of his relatives by commenting that he couldn’t pass the driving and the written test, CHIEN-PIN believes that “no matter how many times I fail, I will keep trying it until I pass it.” Although memory is not his strength and passing the written test will still be tough as usual, he will try as hard as possible without giving up.

After graduation, whether CHIEN-PIN‘s decision is to continue his education or to start working, there’s no doubt that he will committed himself wholeheartedly. He also shared with us that even if he gets accepted by his ideal university, he’ll still do a part-time job. “I’d give my parents most of the salary and only leaving NTD$1,000 at most for myself.” Without fancy words, CHIEN-PIN‘s expressed his plan with determination and a proud smile.

The growth path of a child is like entering a game with lots of levels. The initial setting of Slow-Flying angel is more complicated than other children. As one of the Slow-Flying angels, CHIEN-PIN insists on overcoming all the difficulties on the way growing up until he upgrades to be a better self. With his endless endeavors, he is sure to be a shining star on the way to be a master of cuisines.
