How did you find Eden and why did you want to have internship experience with us?

volunteer makes difference

Article by Vera Kam

Ever since my first visit to Taiwan in 2012, I’ve always had a desire to come back and either study or intern here. Because of this, I began looking for internships that was related to my field of study, Social Work, in Taiwan. Eden was one of the first few organizations that pulled up on the internet when I began researching for possible internship locations to apply for. The reasons that Eden stood out to me amongst other organizations was because it worked with disabled individuals, had a Christian background, and practices both micro and macro level Social Work.

Professionally, I have a background in Medical Social Work, where I work closely with disabled individuals. Because most of my practice was in the medical setting, I was interested in how Social Work is done at the community setting, where both micro and macro social work is done. I felt that having the opportunity to learn from staff at Eden would help me grow and be more open minded as a Social Worker.

As someone who works with disabled individuals, I was interested in learning what their experience is like within the community, and how policy and available resources impact their well-being. When looking through the Eden website, I felt that this would a great opportunity to learn different way of providing community level support and the importance of this type of resource for disabled individuals.
