Eden's Assistive Devices Doctor

“The maintenance is all about conscience.  If a flying plane falls because of malfunction, the falling will not only happen to the pilot, but also to the pilot’s whole family members,” said by the assistive devices doctor, Mr. Yang Zhi-Qiang.  Dr. Yang values not just the home of his own but also the homes of others.  When it comes to work, Dr. Yang is strictly professional and precise, and when it comes to family life, he is a good father by setting examples of practice and precept for his children.

Entering the Social Welfare & Service Center for People with Disabilities in Zhulian St., Hsinchu City, you’ll see the right section of the 1st floor situated a warm homely living space with sunflower color tone.  There are all kinds of assistive devices in this space, and the warm tone makes them less inflexible and cold.  Dr. Yang guides the interview team to each room of this special base.

The sunflower building receives the donations of assistive devices all around the country.  All devices will be gathered in a space roughly the size of car parking space.  This is step one.  Step two, the devices will be sent into a closed space and flushed by high-velocity stream of water.  Step three is sanitization by ultra violet radiation.  Step four, the devices will be disassembled and repaired.  Step five, they will be stored in the warehouse for the collecting of the people in need.  After going through the process of cleaning and maintaining the devices, we team members are sincerely convinced this place provides reliable services.

Before switching to the job of assistive devices maintenance, Dr. Yang was a ground staff maintaining phantom fighters in the air force.  No matter how small the broken component was, Dr. Yang was able to fix it accurately.  “The plane maintenance involves not just the pilot.  If a flying plane falls, the falling will not only happen to the pilot, but also to the pilot’s whole family members.” Dr. Yang said with mixed emotions.

The major difference between maintenances of phantom fighters and assistive devices is to face the publics, to discuss and understand their needs of suitable devices, which will greatly improve their uncomfortable living style.  Dr. Yang derives the greatest satisfaction from the smiles of the people receiving the suitable assistive devices.

However, every now and then Dr. Yang will inevitably receive customer complaints or encounter unpleasant communications.  When people have trouble getting the subsidy of devices form the government, they will unleash their discontent in the doctor.  Dr. Yang chooses not to bring home these negative feelings.  His secret is to leave everything behind in the office after work.

There are six people in Dr. Yang’s family, and he has two daughters and two sons.  At home, he fixes all the broken things on his own.  With Dr. Yang’s modeling, his elder son likes to make handicrafts and even shows his affections for his grandfather by creating a simple accessible device lowering the height difference of the doors at home to let his grandfather walk through easily with his ill knees.  Dr. Yang’s four children all pursue different professions and interests.  The elder daughter is studying Applied Mathematics.  The younger daughter is interested in nursing.  The older son is attracted by mechanical and construction engineering.  The younger son loves cooking.  The Yang couple fully support their children to develop their interests and prepare for their careers.

What makes Dr. Yang so proud is not how high the school scores his children can get but how they are willing to offer helps.  If no one in the class is willing to do the bathroom clean-up, his child will be the volunteer.  Dr. Yang thinks the true happiness lies in the safe and peaceful life with his family members around.
