Volunteer in an outlying island — Love in Xiao Liu Qiu

People generally think Xiao Liu Qiu as a tourist island; however, for volunteer Lun-Qi Liu, who has put a lot of effort in local early intervention service for several years, Xiao Liu Qiu is just like her second home, a place with warm hospitality.

Picture I. Liu Lun-Qi help the families who join the early intervention program. She loves the warm hospitality of the island.

In Donggang Township, Pingtung County, compared to those tourists who cannot wait to see the beautiful scenery in Xiao Liu Qiu, Lun-Qi Liu pays her attention to those “slow flying angels” who urgently need early intervention.  Just right after the ship is moored in the wharf, she rides her scooter under the blazing sun door-to-door to help the slow flying angels receive early intervention.

Five years ago, Lun-Wi Liu began to volunteer in Xiao Liu Qiu. She found that this island was lack of resources. Except pre-school itinerant services, there was no resource for students with special educational needs. Furthermore, since their parents had only little understanding of early intervention, it was even harder for Lun-Qi Liu to promote this. “If children with severe disability don’t receive early intervention, their parents will worry about whether they can enter the education system.” said Lun-Qi Liu.

With the promotion of early intervention and the growth of tourism in Xiao Liu Qiu, the parents in this new generation began to be aware of the importance of early intervention. “The people there will now actively report us.”said Lun-Qi Liu.

During Lun-Qi Liu’s volunteer, she met a child with multiple disabilities. His arms were dislocated and his aural comprehension and sight were damaged as he was born. After visiting him, Lun-Qi Liu even found that he has imperforate anus. Imagine how difficult is for a family to take care of this child. With the increase of early intervention resources, his mother has taken hime to rehab from his babyhood. Although they have to travel all the way to Kaohsiung Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, his mother still determines to do this. Now, the child is two years old and is able to enter schools or the early intervention system. His mother’s positive attitude and determination are very impressive.

In another case, the family first refused the service but surprisingly, they later became volunteers who support the Eden Social Welfare Foundation. Lun-Qi Liu’s co-worker once met a parent who not only helped her to pick up disabled children but also helped them get in or out of the car since he was one of the few people who had cars on the island. This was very touched.

Being in Xiao Liu Qiu for years,  Lun-Qi Liu has a close relationship with the inhabitants.  During the reunion dinner this year, she deeply felt the value of being a volunteer.  A reunion dinner would be prix fixe in the past; however, in this form, only few people could join the activity. Therefore, Lun-Qi Liu decided to change it to buffet to allow more people to join it. Surprisingly, with the support of  the church and the owner of a scooter retailer, delicacy for about sixty to seventy people was served in only limited budget, as if the Miracle of the five loaves and two fish in the Bible.

Although Lun-Qi Liu has become the supervision, she still offers her service in the forefront. “When I arrive in Xiao Liu Qiu, I can always feel the passion of the inhabitants. This is a place where I can distract myself from work,” when mentioning about Xiao Liu Qiu, Lun-Qi Liu said thankfully. She appreciates those who have helped her to acieve goals. “Instead of saying that I am helping others, those families actually help me even more.”

Liu Lun-Qi received an award of oustanding social worker by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in this APR.

Five years passed quickly as she stayed in Xiao Liu Qiu. Lun-Qi Liu’s hard work has been recognized by the people. She received an award of ourstanding social worker by the Ministry of Health and Welfare. “It’s my honor to receive this award. Thanks for all the people who have supported me!” she said, cheerfully as she received the award.
