CRPD Article 30 Participation in Cultural Life, Recreation, Leisure and Sport | 2019 Asian Pacific Accessible Art Festival | Eden Social Welfare Foundation

To provide an exchange platform for artists with different abilities in the Asian and Pacific region to showcase their talents and potentials as well as promote social inclusion, Eden is honored to co-organize 2019 Asia Pacific Accessible Art Festival (APAAF) in Macau. Most important, Eden hope that the spirit of Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) can be put into practice in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Asia Pacific Accessible Art Festival (APAAF) was first organized in Eden, Taiwan since 2017, and was expected to be held annually in different countries and regions. This year, 2019 APAAF, is co-hosted by Caritas Macau and the University of Saint Joseph (USJ). The festival attracts 41 groups from 15 countries and regions in Asia-Pacific to join and support. More than 250 persons with disabilities and representatives attended the event, including workshops, accessible tourists, and artwork exhibition. The 143 pieces of artworks are created with a unique cultural style by persons with disabilities in different countries. The 2020 Asia Pacific Accessible Art Festival is expected to hold in Thailand.

The main purpose of the APAAF is to show the beauty of the arts. By establishing the art and culture platform through the series of activities, enforcing the cultural interaction, and enhancing the cooperation with different countries’ non-government organizations, everyone can take part in arts (Leave no one behind). For persons with disabilities, art is like a type of communication. With art creation, they can express their feeling and emotion to others. Besides, persons with disabilities deserve an equal opportunity to show their artistic talents and potentials. APAAF aims to make a worldwide inclusive society, which is the main core of CRPD Article30- Participation in cultural life, recreation, leisure, and sport:States Parties shall take appropriate measures to enable persons with disabilities to have the opportunity to develop and utilize their creative, artistic and intellectual potential, not only for their own benefit but also for the enrichment of society.

All in all, there are a total of 7 members and 3 service users of the Eden Social Welfare Foundation that had participated in the 2019 Asia Pacific Accessible Art Festival. It is vital that the service users shared and communicated their ideas with the persons attending the festival in the Asia-Pacific region. Let’s strengthen the cooperation of art and culture in the Asia-Pacific region, empower the rights on persons with disabilities, and achieve the vision of social identity and social inclusion through the accessible art platform.
