2008 Wenchuan (Sichuan Province) Earthquake

A drastic earthquake occurred in the Wenchaun(汶川) area of Sichuan, China on the 12th of May, 2008. During this tragedy, 69,227 people were killed, 374,643 people were injured and 96,544 were hospitalized after the earthquake. It is estimated that more than 10,000 people became persons with disabilities in parts of Deyang(德陽) area. In June 2008, Eden went to Deyang and Mianyang (綿陽) for the first time to evaluate the survivors’ needs. Moreover, Eden donated 500 wheelchairs via Chinese Association of the Disabled to survivors in these areas.

Located in the north of Mianzhu City (綿竹市), near Baiyun Mountain (白雲山) and Horse Racing Mountain (跑馬嶺山), Jiulong Town (九龍鎮), with a population of over 10,000 people, features its leisure time of agriculture. There are plenty of farm houses going towards the Peak of Horse Racing Mountain. People in Sichuan spend their vacations here every holiday. It is such beautiful scenery with white pear, pink nectarine and yellow rapeseed flowers blooming all over the mountain, especially when it is the pear flower season in March.

However, after the 512 earthquake took place, 95% of the houses in the entire Jiulong Town collapsed. Over 300 people are dead and the beautiful town is almost in ruins.

Guided by God, we came to Jiulong Town, a disaster area without aids and cares from any international or domestic NGOs up to now. For the injured in Jiulong Town to recover after the emergency treatments, Eden Social Welfare Foundation worked with the Department of Health in Jiulong Town. We founded the 512 Earthquake Injured Recovery Rooms, recruiting Occupational Therapists and Physical Therapists from Taiwan. They worked as volunteers in the disaster areas on the front line to provide the victims with free service of rehabilitation and treatment.

We expect that the spring, with pear flowers and rapeseed flowers in blossom, would also sprout in the minds of residents in Jiulong Town – revive their minds and souls; rebuild their lives!
