2010 Haiti Earthquake

The earthquake that hit Haiti in January 2010 killed more than 230,000 people and injured more than 300,000. More than one millions of the Haitian population lost their homes. Although Haiti is no longer the focus of the media, the challenging reconstruction of this developing nation is still taking place today.

Eden donated 30,000USD to Handicap International (HI) for the Haiti relief project focusing on the support and rehabilitation of persons with disabilities. HI esteemed that approximately 2,000 to 3,000 people underwent amputation due to the earthquake. After the earthquake, people with newly aquired disabilities became extremely vulnerable.

Handicap International-Belgium (HIB) started relief work with its partnering organization, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)-Belgium. Much of HIB’s work was conducted in MSF-led hospital located in Sarthe. Services provided by HIB include physiotherapy and occupational therapy, multidisciplinary medical care, disability prevention, provision of temporary prosthetics, relevant care and assistive devices for amputees, setting up community rehabilitation centers, and other rehabilitation services. By AS of October 2010, HIB has taken care of 3,489 patients, with over 8,000 direct treatments carried out.

Focusing on post-disaster reconstruction, Eden sent its first need-assessment team to Haiti from 20 to 30 April 2010. Eden’s representatives visited international organizations, churches and governmental agencies in order to assess the needs of people with disabilities and other disadvantages in Haiti. In the future, we hope to support local projects aimed at enhancing education and vocational training of persons with disabilities.

Eden's Revisit to Haiti

On April 2010, Eden Social Welfare Foundation dispatched the first reconstruction assessment team to Haiti to survey post-earthquake reconstruction services. In November 2012, under the support of the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in the Republic of Haiti, Eden Foundation revisited Haiti to carry out a second round of post-disaster reconstruction project assessments. The team visited the City of Carrefour, located near the capitol of Port-au-Prince, for Haiti’s biggest sewing production center, where they assessed the actual working conditions of the Income Generating Activity, a project funded by the company. Eden’s representative in this visit to Haiti also interacted and communicated with trainees from the Handicap International Haiti Office Volunteer Training Program to further our plans in developingoverseas services and projects in Haiti.
