Stories of Wheelchair Recipients

Henry from Malawi

Henry is a 16-year-old boy from a village in Mchinji district, Malawi. When Henry was around the age of seven, he suddenly collapsed on his way home from school. Due to his rarely encountered illness, Henry was never able to walk again ever since his fall. Because his family is too impoverished to afford a wheelchair, Henry has spent the last decade “under house arrest”. He was hopelessly unable to move around on his own, unable even to go to school. However, Henry’s life was dramatically changed after he received a wheelchair from Eden Social Welfare Foundation. Now Henry is back in primary school.

When representatives from Eden’s local partner Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) visited him, he excitedly showed them a page in his exercise book in which there was a math’s test he had done very well in. “I am very happy to be back in school! And my grades are very good!” Recently, Henry has even begun to repair radio players.
